Mission completed, 101 nurses to help save lives
One hundred and one final year nursing students were given the rite of passage into the nursing profession on August 7, 2013 at the annual Nursing Pinning ceremony held on Northern Caribbean University’s main campus in Mandeville. The event was held under the theme, “Instruments: Equipped, and Committed for Excellence in Service”.

Family and friends of the late Former Director of Alumni Relations at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) Howard Maxwell Smith bid their final farewells at the institution’s Main Campus on Tuesday, July 30, 2013. Members of the university’s administrators were among well-wishers who convened in the NCU Auditorium to celebrate Smith’s life.

A Closer Look: Wynter, Graduating Class President
Born in the parish of St James, Jamaica, Dwayne Sebastian Wynter grew up in the community of Pondside in Hanover. He received his secondary education at Merlene Ottey High School and in 2003 was accepted to pursue the Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication at Northern Caribbean University. However, by Spring of 2004 he changed to his current major- Teacher Education.

Graduation at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) is a special three day affair that features Consecration and Baccalaureate services, and two Commencements. This year will be no different as the Graduating Class of 2013 will engage in all three. The first event of the three, the Consecration Service, will be held Today, August 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the NCU Gymnatorium and features guest presenter, Pastor Donald Francis from the Central Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

Elder George W. Brown, Former President of Inter-American Division of Seventh-day Adventists will be conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree by Northern Caribbean University (NCU) on Sunday, August 11, 2013 during the institution’s Graduation Exercises. He will also deliver the main address as the speaker for the second Commencement.

Message from the University President to Graduands
Graduation ceremonies are times of celebration, release, and inspiration for more people than those who are actually graduating. At Northern Caribbean University we celebrate graduations for reasons that include the joy we feel for those students who have triumphed and are deemed worthy to receive the degrees with which they will be conferred. Graduations also represent the solutions we offer to meet the challenges in respective industries for which students have been trained. For family and friends of those graduating, this is a time of celebration of the academic prowess of their loved one(s). It is for some a time of release from having to pay school fees, or being denied spending time together.

Thousands Pack ASI Opening Night in Orlando
What appeared to be most, if not all, of the 2,000 registered for the 2013 Adventist-laymen’s Services and Industries (ASI) convention packed a large hall in Orlando, Florida, Wednesday night, August 7, to kick off the group’s annual convocation.

Pushing Through the Trials
Two days and three sermons left. Although there is plenty that could go wrong, I really don’t think it would matter anymore. The young missionaries have pushed through their individual challenges and have encouraged each other to keep remembering the value of one more for Jesus.

It Changed Me
We have all landed now back at home. Each missionary has preached 19 sermons, watched individuals choose Jesus and be baptized, loved hundreds of children (and adults), and in the midst of all of this our own lives have been changed. There were very few frills, only the call to work with “no regrets” for the sake of heaven. And it was there, in the middle of the Great Commission, that Jesus became more Lord and Savior than He had ever been.

Years ago my grandfather built an orphanage in a country that I will leave unnamed. This was a particularly interesting orphanage because it was only for blind children.

Praise the Lord
Psalm 4 seems like an inspiration that has been lifted from Job's experience and accords us the assurance that although we may experience a season of seeming abandonment (and become the laughing stock of scoffers), God will come through at length. As such, we can always be glad and praise may always flow from our lips. Indeed, "weeping may endure for a night, but (praise the Lord) joy cometh in the morning." Ps 30: 5

Another Memorable First Commencement Ceremony at NCU
With the threat of showers held at bay, and the anxious bustle of graduands, guests, and participants on in earnest to classy tunes performed by the sitting band, the countdown was on for the first of two of what are arguably the most prestigious academic events in Jamaica: the first Commencement ceremony for 2013 at Northern Caribbean University (NCU) was soon to begin.
