It can rightly be said that when a person moves away from home to start college, it is one of the major decisions that will ever be taken in life. The difference though is how that experience is created. Moving from one parish to Manchester to the University on the hill can be an excited, yet anxious time; however, traversing the Caribbean Sea to attend this institution can be a life-changing one. Northern Caribbean University (NCU) boasts a cohort of students from over 34 countries.

It is summer! It is a time synonymous to relaxation and spending time with families. The summer can get so hot that most families would gravitate to beaches, rivers, water parks and other water entertainment venues; some would prefer to go fishing or bird hunting, as the summer time is noted for that. It is also the time when parents stress the most important—the ‘back to school experience’ and the long expensive booklist.

The bliss of freedom is an indescribable one. For those whose rights to liberty have been tampered with oftentimes value and appreciate it more than those who were never placed in bondage. The slaves across the West Indies were jubilant on August 1 when the British colonial masters were forced to hand up the despotic rule that they held over humanity for a little more than three centuries.

One of the many childhood delights (for those who grew up in the church) was reading or listening to the stories from the Bible. Among the favourites were the stories of Moses, Joseph, Esther, Jesus, Samuel, the Little Maid and, of course, Daniel. The story of Daniel included Daniel and the three Hebrew Boys, Daniel and the King’s Dream, and Daniel in the Lion Den. The perennial themes were never lost sight of, and interestingly these stories have helped us in diverse circumstances in our lives.

The life of Daniel, as we recounted yesterday, is replete with themes, which children, as well as adults, can learn from. Again I invite you to come with me on a journey to Babylon where we see Daniel in a precarious position, which Northern Caribbean University (NCU) students may find themselves in—to stand alone... to have a purpose firm... to make it known. In other words, Dare to be a Daniel.

As a child growing up in post-colonial Jamaica, Orley Burey was fascinated by the principles of right and wrong and the concept of fair play. He recalls paying particularly keen attention to not only school-yard squabbles, but also to Bible stories at Sabbath School and daily home devotion about Old Testament judges who ruled with wisdom, fairness and integrity. Young Orley made a vow that someday, he too would be a judge.

When I completed my first degree in Barbados, I was not sure which programme of study I wanted to pursue for my masters degree, so I put it off for a few years. When I was finally convicted about what my focus should be I started to search for universities which offered a Reading programme. I was waiting and hoping that the University of the Southern Caribbean in Trinidad would start one, but years passed by slowly but surely and still it didn't institute the programme. In 2007 I felt the urgency to start the search within other universities.

The story of Daniel offers a thrilling account of a young man who had undergone kidnapping, acculturation in Babylon, many near death experiences, and at the same time was God’s prophet, a prince, a prime minister in Babylon, interpreter of dreams and visions for the king and myriads of other functions. Of course all these duties occurred throughout his life and not just as a Hebrew boy, as we are tempted to think.
