The children of the Jamaica Union Conference of Seventh–day Adventist (JAMU) shook the walls of the Northern Caribbean University (NCU) Gymnatorium on Sunday, May 27, 2012 as they celebrated Jamaica’s culture during the weekend convention organized just for children. Under the theme, “Children of Grace: Healthy, Happy and Heaven-bound,” the festival of prayer, praise, and performances was exciting as groups from different churches sang and danced. The young, strong and vibrant voices of Brian Rowe and Seychelle Darby recited well known poems of the late Dr the Honourable Louise “Ms Lou” Bennett-Coverley. The thunderous voice of Danielle Walker pulled the audience to their feet, as she declared, with a strong, powerful vocal and physical expression, her desires to meet Jesus in the song, ‘Jerusalem.’

NCU Promotes Accountability

What are you accountable for? Everyone has to account for something. Old and young, big and small, rich or poor, married or single, we all have to explain our actions. Everyday millions of individuals justify the tasks which they are assigned to. Accountability is not something that you can “put on” someone. Yes, we must hold people accountable; but before this can occur, we must first make the personal decision to be accountable and model accountable behaviours. What is accountability? How important is accountability in the workplace and what does the Bible say about being accountable?

As I study each chapter I look for Jesus and for what He wants to say to me, whether as a reassurance of a promise made, or as a reprimand. Now because these stories are actual history they do not always carry a straight message for what obtains in our present situation. So here’s how it happens for me. It’s like a malfunctioning television where the picture comes on and off, on and off, but it comes on long enough for me to make out a clear image. That said, here’s some of what I see in this chapter:

Portraits of God's Love

Perhaps the most well known and used text in the Bible is John 3:16; this portion of scripture emphasises the reason Christ laid down His life on Calvary for the salvation of the human family. John says that reason is love. “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” It is this same John who helps us to understand why God can only act out of love in 1 John 4: 8 where he points out that God is Love. However, we cannot see God directly so He has painted several portraits of Himself: we see that portrait in the life of His son Christ Jesus, and that is why Christ said, when you see me, you see the Father; we see Him in his creation, that is why the Psalmist David says in Psalm 19 that “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handywork;” indeed, human beings have also been tasked with that responsibility – to show forth God’s love. This photographic review gives us a glimpse, a portrait of God’s love.

KINGSTON, Apr 30, 2012 (IPS) - A growing appetite for oil and some of the Caribbean region's highest electricity rates and petroleum prices are driving Jamaica's thrust toward clean energy alternatives. This country of 2.7 million people now spends more than it earns on imported oil. Between January and June 2011, Jamaica spent 1.48 billion dollars on oil imports, while export earnings for January to September 2011 were 1.3 billion.
