Unemployed, and dependent on family resources or guardians that barely cover the rising costs tuition, study materials, housing and food expenses; that is the plight of most NCU students. A new storm is coming and it’s not Alberto. If you thought it was bad yesterday, today is a whole new ball game. June 1, 2012 marks the implementation of the new taxes on basic food items, electricity and other necessary commodities. One might wonder, how do we cope?

Imagine a classroom with no white board, an office with no desk, a conference room with no conference table. In this state, these rooms are likely to be mistaken for storage rooms. Furniture and furnishing give classrooms, offices, conference rooms and any other room its purpose, style, and appeal. Massages, comedy, colouring, not to mention exemplary food in a relaxed environment, a day well spent. Yes, I am undoubtedly referring to the Behavioural Sciences Department’s annual appreciation day for practicum supervisors. 2012’s festivities were something to savour, an extra special effort was made to set this year’s appreciation day apart from the rest. There were different areas set up and it was the general consensus that the massage area was the crowd favourite, relaxing while listening to some calming music as the professional s works their magic, t’was nothing short of magnificent. Please enjoy this photographic highlight of the event:

Conquering Your Mount Everest

Another week has to come to an end. Some of us never knew we would have made it this far. Throughout the course of the week, we were faced with numerous trials. Some received bad news, a loved one may have died, a friend may have succumbed to a terrible accident; while others received good news: there is a new addition to the family, or a friend is getting married. Or maybe your week was not as exciting as you hoped it would have been. Sometimes we all take our lives for granted. We complain about everything. We don’t have enough clothes, there is no food in the fridge, and our nails need to get done...we usually focus on the materials things. Material possessions are limited; they only last for a time.

Portraits of God's Love

Perhaps the most well known and used text in the Bible is John 3:16; this portion of scripture emphasises the reason Christ laid down His life on Calvary for the salvation of the human family. John says that reason is love. “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” It is this same John who helps us to understand why God can only act out of love in 1 John 4: 8 where he points out that God is Love. However, we cannot see God directly so He has painted several portraits of Himself: we see that portrait in the life of His son Christ Jesus, and that is why Christ said, when you see me, you see the Father; we see Him in his creation, that is why the Psalmist David says in Psalm 19 that “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handywork;” indeed, human beings have also been tasked with that responsibility – to show forth God’s love. This photographic review gives us a glimpse, a portrait of God’s love.

The ideal college lifestyle should involve more than development of our academic and intellectual faculty. College is a good place in which persons can hone their interaction and social skills. Many marriages result from a relationship that grew out of college or school friendship. In the context of the Seventh-day Adventist school, interaction between the sexes is more than encouraged, with more than enough biblical guidelines and advice. Young people must be cognizant that though intimacy and attraction is expected amongst themselves, the primary goal for enrolment in University is to complete a specific degree or course of study. Whatever earthly distraction that may come between us and that task is of lesser importance. Here are seven tips to maintaining a healthy, Christian relationship while in college/university.

‘Amidst the pine trees and wind, under the dazzling sun, students could be seen making their way to the Main Auditorium for the noon-day Chapel assembly of the Summer Session 1. Though student enrolment in the summer sessions is significantly lower than that of the regular fall and spring semesters, the Auditorium was reasonably filled. The mood seemed very festive, probably related to the complimentary weather conditions on the outside.
