The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) officially began its Jamaica Military Tattoo with an array of pomp, pageantry and military precision at the Up-Park Camp headquarters on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 7:30 pm. Upon entering the South Camp Road Military Base in Kingston, the discipline and order associated with the Army is evident from the clean streets, well manicured lawns and mirror-shine boots seen on the campus. Soldiers parade the campus proudly in their uniforms, ushering patrons and generally maintaining the high standards of the grounds. What exactly is the Tattoo and why did the Military integrate a Tattoo ceremony into their system?

At Northern Caribbean University (NCU) attaining the best education is the aim. For over a hundred years NCU has assisted students to attain a quality Christ centred education. A part of the mechanism that makes this possible is the University's focus on research, innovation, and advancement in technology. Indeed, our students tell us that they enjoy the balanced education they receive. They tell us that they appreciate the technological advances we have made in putting systems and programmes in place that simplify the learning process. The evidence lies in the increased calls for a distance education programme. The University has answered the call and continues to do so through its Learning Management System (LMS).

Portraits of God's Love

Perhaps the most well known and used text in the Bible is John 3:16; this portion of scripture emphasises the reason Christ laid down His life on Calvary for the salvation of the human family. John says that reason is love. “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” It is this same John who helps us to understand why God can only act out of love in 1 John 4: 8 where he points out that God is Love. However, we cannot see God directly so He has painted several portraits of Himself: we see that portrait in the life of His son Christ Jesus, and that is why Christ said, when you see me, you see the Father; we see Him in his creation, that is why the Psalmist David says in Psalm 19 that “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handywork;” indeed, human beings have also been tasked with that responsibility – to show forth God’s love. This photographic review gives us a glimpse, a portrait of God’s love.

From Wednesday July 4 through to Friday July 6, 2012, The Department of Graduate, Education and Leadership hosted its annual Leadership Round Table 2012 at Northern Caribbean University’s (NCU) main campus in Mandeville, Manchester. The theme “Leadership, Service, and Higher Education Transforming a Nation” is a propos as it is judicious for this time. Mrs. Gloria Barnes-Gregory, Dean of the College of Education and Leadership explains that “it is not possible to separate Leadership and Service especially as the cry for accountability, equity, and sustainability are buzz words in the vocabulary of many people. Moreover, the demand for leaders to serve is underscored by the demands for justice and voice. It is education that will ‘emancipate a nation from mental slavery’ and propel a nation to lift its citizenry to world class standards. It is research that accompanies educational innovations that will provide the answers for decision making.”

The friend of a writer once asked him, out of sheer admiration for the work he does, "how do you do it?" He replied, "God speaks to me and I just write." What a confirmation of the passage, "I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the gifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you." Ex. 31: 6 (latter half).

Consider an insight into all things known and unknown, the enlightenment of the mind, the output of knowledge and freedom of intellect. An entrance to the wider world of our past, present and future is the esteemed Northern Caribbean University’s Department of History and Geography. Geared toward not only the education of its students but also toward those of the wider student population, the department of History and Geography informs through a series of seminars and forums throughout the year, one of which is Jamaica day. Ms Sheryl Reid of the History department posited her opinion, “we cater to everyone and to almost every historical milestone that our country has experienced, example, Black History Month, and we celebrate by hosting a series of events to which the entire student body and public are invited. This department is not boring or lame contrary to popular belief but we pull students in and give them an opportunity to share in the different aspects of the department.”
