He approached the oblivious monarch, knife in hand. This was finally his chance to end this madness. But before plunging the blade into his back, the king-to-be paused and realized the man in front of him wasn’t just any old king: this was God’s king.

Thank God for dads. Anyone can be a father (sperm donor), but it takes someone special to be a dad. The best thing a dad can do for his children is to love their mother. Research tells us that children have happier lives when their fathers spend time with them. Children do better in school and are less rebellious when fathers are involved in their lives. Dads are not just substitute moms.

As I have come to see it, music is not an optional side order on the menu of worship; it is a part of the main course. In fact on any given day it is the "Special" on offer - no pun intended. At significant turns on the human journey the occasions are usually marked by music:

So King Ahasuerus, doubtlessly drunk, is throwing a party, and things are going great. Women were needed to make it complete. Beautiful women. “Ah Vashti, where’s Vashti. Someone get me Vashti!” Well Vashti doesn’t come, Ahasuerus gets angry, and is advised to… divorce her, and he does. But as life would have it, we don’t stay drunk and angry forever and the things done during those spells often bring regret. So King Ahasuerus remembers Vashti, and you get a keen sense that he’s sorry. But he’d gone too far and things got really complicated. Implications abound for our Church today.

Minute Details That Matter

Imagine the chagrin and dismay I experienced as I faced this woman who told me blankly that I was just a number to her. I had just come back to the campus of one of my alma maters having represented a government institution at an international conference. When I got back I was greeted with a letter from my mother saying that she was not well. Those were not the days of cells phones, and we didn’t have a regular landline phone at home, so I couldn’t call her up and find out how she was doing. I needed to go home. The facility was on a campus-wide lockdown, due to some disciplinary issues, so I had to seek special permission to be allowed to go home. I took the letter, went in to see the lady in charge, and presented my case. She was however not to be persuaded and to my intensified plea, she informed me that to her I was just a number. With that I promptly left her office, packed my bags and went to see my mother. I didn’t care whether or not I finished the programme then. Thank God however, I did.
