Around the world many Christians observe Lent. Lent is a period of observance for forty days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday. The traditional purpose of Lent is to heighten the awareness of all believers. Some believers may prepare themselves through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. There are three traditional pillars of the Lenten observance. These are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This season of Lent helps individuals to refocus their vision on the life and death of Jesus. The goal is not just to abstain from sin for the duration of Lent but to root sin out from their lives. At some point in our lives we all have to abstain from certain habitual indulgence to improve our lifestyle. When an individual denies the worldly of pleasures of life to grasp better opportunities; success is guaranteed.

The 2012 Spring Week of Prayer came to a bittersweet end with a heart touching, spirit-stirring sermon from Jamaican born speaker, Pastor Ainsworth Keith Morris. Titled “Just for me,” the final Sabbath’s sermon was applicable to almost every individual present. “Each of us has our different comfort zones. The difference between good and great is a little extra. Coming out of that comfort zone means just that,” said Pastor Morris. He went on to speak about the dangers of never stepping out of our different comfort zones. “We have become so fearful, where we now want everything to be safe. You and I must realize that there are times that we have to take risks in order to achieve. Life will come with some broken moments, you will be stood up, betrayed, cheated on but you have got to understand how to turn your battle scars into beauty marks,” this was met with a hearty amen from the audience

Portraits of God's Love

Perhaps the most well known and used text in the Bible is John 3:16; this portion of scripture emphasises the reason Christ laid down His life on Calvary for the salvation of the human family. John says that reason is love. “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” It is this same John who helps us to understand why God can only act out of love in 1 John 4: 8 where he points out that God is Love. However, we cannot see God directly so He has painted several portraits of Himself: we see that portrait in the life of His son Christ Jesus, and that is why Christ said, when you see me, you see the Father; we see Him in his creation, that is why the Psalmist David says in Psalm 19 that “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handywork;” indeed, human beings have also been tasked with that responsibility – to show forth God’s love. This photographic review gives us a glimpse, a portrait of God’s love.

Since all work and no play make Jill a dull girl I decided that Sports Day 2012 was not going to miss me, not for love nor for money. I would have to be there one way or another. Well, I kept my promise for I did not want to only read about the happenings, I wanted to be there to see the live action. To be honest with you, my original idea for this year was to be out there in my house colour (blue) as a quiet observer but when the action kicked off, I must confess that everything changed.

The long anticipated banquet just went and as usual there were some amount of anxiety to keep at bay. While a little excitement is good, too much anxiety is unhealthy and can lead to stress and ill-health. Those who waited to do things at the last minute usually run into problems. Since I want you to have lots of fun and enjoyment I am going to outline a few reminders on three areas.

Is your marriage on paper only?

I love to attend weddings and I am always fascinated at the end of the ceremony when the pastor says 'You may kiss the bride' and pronounces the couple man and wife. At this time the pastor usually gives the couple a piece of paper (the unofficial marriage certificate) which will be used to secure permanent papers. This piece of paper is very important as it is the official government document which the couple will use to conduct official business. They will also use this paper as proof of marriage.
