The Tree
For us it was a big event: we cut a 45-foot magnolia tree in our front yard. It had been a beautiful tree whose stature and sweet-smelling flowers had enticed us to look at the home more than four years ago. It had always been green, had looked majestic, and had provided shade. It had stood there for more than 45 years. However, two years ago its leaves had started to fall en masse, and every storm brought down more branches—first small ones, then larger exemplars. Fewer flowers appeared, and the leaves that stayed on the tree looked shriveled and dry.

Human Suffering and Creation
A woman is beaten up by her drunk husband. She covers it up for a time, but then goes to the police. A young teenager is teased by her peers because she won’t have sex with any of the boys in the high school. A man loses his job because he won’t work on the Sabbath. It throws his family into a tailspin of debt. Sound familiar? These sad experiences are common enough occurrences of suffering repeated in our world again and again.

Northern Caribbean University’s (NCU) Salem campus held its annual Chapel day, themed ‘Propelled by the Word’, at the Brown’s Town church where the NCU’s family from across Jamaica united in worship. The special annual service is one of celebration and thanksgiving, for students and workers from the Salem campus and the NCU fraternity.

NCU Connect 2013 in Port Maria
A team from Northern Caribbean University (NCU) travelled to the cool northern parish of St. Mary for the fourth in a series dubbed NCU Connect 2013 on May 2. Visitors to the exhibitions mounted at the Hi-Lo Car Park learnt about the wide variety of programmes offered by the university and benefited from free health checks. They also stood the chance of winning tuition scholarships and discounts. NCU FM was on site and carried a live outside broadcast of the day’s activities.

NCU Students among Leaders Invited to Meeting With Youth Minister
Kingston: Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna Friday, May 3 met with representatives of several students associations to discuss the Ministry’s budget for the 2013-2014 financial year, the priority programmes of the Ministry and issues of concern to the students’ associations. The youth who participated in the meeting represented the National Secondary Students Council, the University of the West Indies Guild of Students, the University of Technology Students Union, the Jamaica Union of Tertiary Students, the Caribbean Maritime Institute Students Union, and the students union of Northern Caribbean University as well as the students’ councils of several high schools and colleges.
